Symmetry Probes of Quantum Matter

We are an experimental condensed matter physics group starting in September 2025 at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria. We explore the causes and consequences of symmetry breaking in quantum materials, as well as its relationship to topology. We develop experimental methods sensitive to broken symmetries, and use them to discover, characterize and manipulate novel phenomena.

Our Tools

While symmetry and topology are powerful and general organizing principles for all phases of matter, the observable manifestation of broken symmetry is material-specific. This is why we employ a range of experimental tools sensitive to distinct energy scales. We use theory and modelling to combine information from complementary experiments into a coherent understanding of each material.
